Build a Mix-and-Match Meal Prep Grid
Prepare flexible protein, produce, grain or starch, and measured sauce components, then label, chill, freeze, and rotate.
A mix-and-match prep grid can make meals flexible while keeping portions easier to understand. Prepare a few protein options, produce, a grain or starch, and sauces or toppings separately. Label, chill, freeze, and rotate the components so you can combine them according to hunger, schedule, preference, and the next meal.
Prepare protein foods safely and portion them after cooking when the calorie reference is based on the cooked amount. Options may include poultry, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, yogurt, or another suitable food. Keep raw animal foods separate from ready-to-eat ingredients, wash hands and surfaces, and cook and store foods according to safety guidance.
Prepare flexible components
Wash, chop, roast, steam, or otherwise prepare produce as appropriate. Record any oil, dressing, cheese, or other additions. For rice, pasta, quinoa, potatoes, or another grain or starch, record the cooked yield and use a consistent scoop or cooked weight. Water gained or lost during cooking changes the weight and volume.
Store sauces and toppings separately when practical. Measure items such as pesto, tahini, hummus, nuts, seeds, cheese, dressings, and sweetened sauces using their labels or recipe totals. Separate storage can preserve texture and lets each meal use the amount that fits.
When assembling a meal, record the portion of each component actually used. Include beverages and extra toppings when relevant. Avoid assigning one fixed estimate to every bowl if their component amounts differ. If exact measurement is not practical, use a reasonable estimate and keep the language approximate.
Label perishable containers and cool them promptly. Freeze portions that will not be eaten within a safe period, rotate older items forward, and reheat properly. Ingredient changes require an updated calorie estimate. An old label should not follow a different recipe or brand.
The grid is a planning tool, not a requirement to eat identical meals. Combine components in soups, wraps, salads, bowls, plates, or culturally familiar dishes. Adjust for appetite, activity, health, allergies, budget, and access. Protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, sodium, added sugars, food safety, enjoyment, and satisfaction matter in addition to calories.
The related African Mango Plus supplement is optional, is not needed for meal prep, and does not guarantee weight-loss results. Supplements may interact with medicines. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing diabetes or another medical condition, or recovering from disordered eating should seek individualized guidance. Stop tracking if it becomes distressing or compulsive.
