Raspberry Baked French Toast with Plain Yogurt
Baked whole grain French toast pairs with warm raspberries and plain yogurt. #FrenchToast #BreakfastIdeas #LighterBreakfast #HealthyRecipes
French toast can be prepared with a light coating of oil and a fruit topping rather than a pan full of butter and a generous syrup pour. This baked version uses whole grain bread, egg, milk, raspberries, and plain yogurt. It offers a lighter preparation approach without attaching an uncalculated calorie number to the plate. The flavor comes from toasted bread and tart fruit, so choose ingredients you enjoy rather than expecting it to taste like a heavily sweetened restaurant version.
For one serving, gather two small slices of whole grain bread, one egg, one quarter cup of milk, one half cup of raspberries, one quarter cup of plain yogurt, and one teaspoon of oil for the baking surface. A few drops of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon are optional. Slightly stale bread absorbs the egg mixture without falling apart as quickly as very soft fresh bread. Keep the slices reasonably similar in thickness so they finish together.
Heat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly oil a small baking tray or suitable baking dish. Whisk the egg and milk with the optional vanilla or cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Dip each bread slice into the mixture, turning to coat both sides. Let it absorb a little liquid without leaving it submerged until fragile. Lift the bread carefully and place it on the prepared surface with space between the slices.
Bake until the underside begins to color, then turn gently and continue until the bread is lightly golden and the egg coating is fully set. Start checking around ten minutes, but allow the bread thickness and oven to guide the total time. There should be no wet egg mixture left in the center. Cut the toast into triangles after cooking if that makes it easier to serve.
Warm the raspberries in a small saucepan with a spoonful of water until they soften and release juice. Stir gently rather than crushing every berry. If using frozen berries, follow their package cooking guidance. Spoon the warm fruit beside the toast and add the plain yogurt at the table. Keeping the toppings separate until serving prevents the bread from becoming soggy before you eat.
Egg and yogurt contribute protein, bread provides a grain component, and raspberries bring fruit. The recipe's actual energy content depends on the bread, milk, yogurt, and amount of oil used. Measuring the cooking fat and using unsweetened toppings makes the preparation more deliberate, but it does not guarantee a particular dietary result. Adjust the portion or add another food if the plate does not meet your appetite.
You can mix the egg coating while the oven heats and prepare the raspberries during baking. For a different fruit, try chopped strawberries cooked briefly until softened. Refrigerate leftovers promptly, keeping toast and toppings separate, and reheat the toast thoroughly before serving. The useful idea is a clear separation of jobs: the oven sets and browns the bread, the saucepan softens the fruit, and the yogurt adds a cool finish without requiring another sweet sauce.
Bake the soaked bread until the egg is set and serve with raspberries cooked without added syrup.
